How Green Is Your Beauty Routine?
This month we’re shining a light on makeup removal and how easy it is to transition from being reliant on single-use staples to becoming a reusables queen.
While it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when making the switch to eco-friendly choices, it’s important to remember small change really does make a big difference. Switching out cotton (single use) pads for reusable ones, for example, is just one of the many ways you can green up your beauty and skincare routine. Both the planet and your skin will thank you for it.
What’s the problem with cotton makeup remover pads?
Think about this; you use up to three cotton pads each time you cleanse your face in the morning and another three to remove your makeup at night. That’s six pads a day, 182 a month or a whopping 2190 year that’s destined for landfill. While on the surface cotton might seem to be a pretty good choice, did you know it can be a real drain on the environment? It can take up to 20,000 litres of water to produce one kilogram of cotton, and if it’s not organic, then there’s the issue of pesticides depleting soils or leaching into our waterways. Then there’s the issue of bleaching and processing that’s needed to make those little rounds fluffy and oh so perfectly white. What’s more, when they’re flushed down the toilet or end up in our waterways, they can wreak havoc on our oceans and marine life.
New Garnier Micellar Reusable Eco Pads
Using reusable pads isn’t rocket science. In fact, it’s one of the easiest things to switch up when it comes to your daily routine. Simply apply your chosen makeup remover you’re your favourite Garnier Micellar water – and wipe in the same way you would disposables. All that’s required is a little soap and water to clean the pad and when you’re done, then just leave them to air dry on a flat surface. When they’re in need of a deeper clean – around once a week – simply pop them in the washing machine and they’re good to go once more. In fact, most will last for up to 1000 washes, so that’s not only a lot of money saved, it’s also a lot of cotton rounds diverted from landfill or our oceans.
It is great to see a global brand like Garnier start to take these steps towards reducing the impact with their new Micellar Eco Pads.
We’ve had a love-hate relationship with make-up removers for a while now thanks to the waste problems associated with single-use cotton balls, cotton pads and even cotton buds. So you can imagine our delight when we started noticing the new breed of reusables. The Garnier Micellar Reusable Eco Pads offer an incredibly simple and sustainable solution to single-use cotton pads. Our first thought was that they were so soft. And while it left us wondering whether they might need a little more texture to truly slough away dead skin cells and impurities, after a splash of Garnier’s Micellar water we were pleasantly surprised at how well it removed our makeup and daily build-up. On days where we didn’t wear any makeup (hey, mum life), we even used them with a little splash of Rose Water Micellar water to wipe away the grime for the day and give ourselves lovely glowing skin.
Like any reusables, a little extra effort does need to go into upkeep and maintenance. But the good news is that when it came to the cleaning front, keeping the pads fresh was straightforward. A tiny squirt of hand wash (natural, of course) and a quick rinse under warm water and they were good to go again. For a deeper clean we threw ours in the wash in a laundry bag and used a fragrance free, non-toxic detergent. We also loved there were three pads in a pack, so even when you have a little more makeup to remove (or you’ve skipped the washing part) you’ve always got a backup. Another plus is that they come in recyclable packaging. A win-win for us!
