Sustainable Beauty: Tips for a more Sustainable Beauty Routine

It’s an interesting time for the beauty industry. The demand for the newest and coolest skincare products has risen, and beauty has followed in the steps of fashion, working quickly to keep up with the lightning-fast trend cycle.
Thankfully, there’s another trend that’s having a big influence on the way we shop. Consumers are demanding that their favourite brands put sustainability and environmental considerations at the forefront. We all want to feel good about the products we use, and it’s not just the formula that matters anymore. But what is sustainable skincare exactly, and how can you incorporate more sustainable values into your skincare routine? Read on for some of our sustainable beauty tips.

What is sustainable beauty?

Sustainable beauty supports ingredients, formulas and products that have a more positive and less detrimental effect on the world around them. From selecting sustainably sourced ingredients and using more recycled content in packaging, sustainable beauty values centre around caring about our impact.

Consider the packaging

We all know that we’re facing a plastic problem. Hard plastic can take over 450 years to decompose, which is all the more reason that recycled and recyclable packaging is so important.

Look for products that are made from recycled materials, like the Fructis Hair Food Shampoo and Conditioner Range. The bottles are made from 100% recycled plastic, which helps keep plastic out of landfill. Glass and aluminium packaging can also be recycled. When the container is empty, make sure to give it a good rinse, allowing it to dry and placing it in the recycling bin.

It’s also a good idea to upsize. For staple products you know you love, like moisturisers, cleansers, and hair products, buy one big bottle instead of many little bottles. This will save plastic, and probably some money as well, as bigger sizes tend to give you more bang for your buck.

Products with cardboard packaging are easy to recycle. Instead of liquid shampoo, many consumers are now opting for a shampoo bar such as the Fructis Shampoo Bar instead. This can be an excellent addition to your sustainable beauty routine as it has a plant-based, vegan and biodegradable formula, and is the equivalent of two 250ml bottles packed neatly into one bar. It is also a good option for travelling, as it saves you the trouble of carrying around a heavy bottle of shampoo.

Watch for waste

Beauty products, especially those we use regularly, can be extremely wasteful. Even small things like sponges, Q-tips, and makeup wipes build up over time. Where possible, replace these items with versions that can be used again and again. The Micellar Eco Pad is a reusable makeup pad that is made to last as it can be washed and re-used. Just dash on a little micellar water, and you’re good to go.

Look at the formula

It’s easy to feel a little lost when looking at the ingredients list for your favourite product. To make sure your products align with your values, look for labels like “vegan” and “cruelty-free”. Another key thing to look for in sustainable beauty products is that they are made from natural origin ingredients. These types of ingredients must be farmed or cultivated, so make sure you do your research on the practices used by your favourite brands.

Check out the brand’s mission statement

Keep an eye out for brands that do their best to be transparent and make it easy for you to understand what goes into making their products. Most beauty companies pursuing sustainable practices will have a mission statement outlining the way they are working to be more considerate and respectful of the environment. This is important, because it gives customers a better understanding about what goes on behind the scenes and it keeps companies accountable for their actions.

The Garnier mission statement breaks down all the ways we strive to be better. From helping our farmers stay up to date with organic and regenerative agriculture, to crafting our formulas from biodegradable and biobased materials, we put a lot of effort into our Greener Beauty initiatives.
