I’m always keen to start fresh come the new year, and buckle down on following a healthy and active lifestyle (and forgetting my festive vices..). This year I’ve pre-empted my vices and have done a juice cleanse before the festive season (just for you!).

Teaming up with local Greene Street Juice Co, I’ve gathered got some pretty insightful information about how great a juice cleanse can be for you, to help you decide if this is something you’d like to partake in come the new year. Why a Juice Cleanse?

Unhealthy foods have a way of creeping into our fridges, pantries and hands very easily, and it is sometimes so difficult breaking the cycle of dependence on these foods. Among so many things, a cleanse is designed to rest the stomach, rest and repair the gut and liver, and flood our body with nutrition. This in turn, helps the body to heal and rejuvenate and ultimately ease food decision making, helping you make healthier choices and be more conscious about what you put in your body.

As well as the ‘gut’ benefits of cleansing, doing a juice cleanse is a quick strategy to strengthen the immune system, sharpen mental clarity, and allow the body to “catch up”. After only one day of stopping solid food intake, enzymes stop visiting your stomach and instead travel into the bloodstream, where they get busy attacking all sorts of old waste matter, damaged cells and pollutants.

What Can I expect?

A vital part of starting any cleanse, that many people don’t do is getting ready for it 2 days before. I ditched my morning coffee in preparation for the cleanse, ate quite lightly the day before so I could almost ease into it.

Day 1

I have 8 juices, and even a menu with time frames to drink each juice! After 2 juices, it’s 10.30am and I start to feel pretty tired. I push through and go onto my third juice for the day and actually felt pretty revived and refreshed after drinking it. It’s amazing what a juice can do!

I noticed that at 3pm I hit another low and start to feel tired, but by 6pm I’ve perked up again, with enough energy to walk my dogs. Overall day 1, I feel pretty normal, just a little tired and hungry, and find myself a little restless when going to sleep.

Day 2

I wake up feeling a little more energised than usual! I love this feeling in the morning, and with no headache, I now finally feel no need for my morning coffee!

I do notice It’s a little bit harder today come lunchtime. I’m getting a little envious of my colleagues lunches and feeling a little tired. I do have a perk up during lunch with a protein banana smoothie – really doesn’t feel like a juice and it’s really delicious and filling!

I do get another lull come 3pm, but again push through. I do notice that I have a white layer on my tongue. Upon investigating, I find that this is my body expelling toxins – crazy!

Day 3

I feel really amazing today! I wake up before my alarm, full of energy (seriously, how does that happen!), my stomach is really flat and I feel lighter.

Then, the crash. They say Day 3 is the hardest, and I understand why. Although waking up feeling amazing, the crash came around lunch time and I just wanted to eat something solid! I understand this is my body withdrawing from my usual carbs, fats and sugar, and trying to get used to less calories. I remind myself that it’s the last day, and to push through and have an early night.

One week post Cleanse

I can’t tell you enough about how amazing I feel. No need for my morning coffee hit, I’ve been waking up before my alarm, super energised. I feel lighter, my skin is glowing and I don’t have one bit of bloat in my stomach at all.

On top of the clear physical changes, the mental changes are huge. I feel like I’m craving nutritious, healthy foods and have no desire for ‘bad’ foods. I feel more clear in my head, and just feel generally more happy and positive. I actually didn’t think a 3 day juice cleanse could do so much, not only for my body physically, but for me mentally. I feel like this has been an amazing way to get on track with a healthy lifestyle, and not cave into a fad diet or quick fix.
