How am I damaging my hair?

  • MECHANICAL DAMAGE

Mechanical damage can result from the use of heat styling tools, bad brushes, and styling behaviour such as excessive brushing, backcombing and unprotected exposure to the sun.

    • HEAT STYLING

Using heat styling tools on wet hair will effectively 'boil' your hair. The rule of thumb: if it's too hot for your skin, its probably too hot for your hair as well! Always let your hair dry naturally before blow drying or styling.

    • AGRESSIVE BRUSHING

Brushing wet hair and over-brushing are the main causes of hair breakage, so always use a good hair brush and be gentle.

  • CHEMICAL DAMAGE

Chemical damage can result from excessive use of perms, chemical straighening, or overexposure to chlorine. Exposure to chemicals such as these gradually break down the natural proteins in the hair causing it to become weak.

    • OVER-STYLING

Styling should work with your hair instead of against it. You need to understand the nature of your hair and work with it. For example, the process of trying to make frizzy curly hair permanently straight will damage it.

    • EXCESSIVE FREQUENCY

Frequent use of chemical treatments (perms, relaxers, bleaching etc.) will weaken the hair, so rather than jump from one chemical treatment to the next it's better to hold off and treat your hair with suitable haircare products before going through another chemical treatment.
